Perhaps the reluctance to teach evolution in Canadian classrooms (Education, September) has something to do with the fact that Canada now repudiates its previous involvement in the British Empire. After all, evolution was used by British imperialists to justify seizing and controlling much of the world by insisting that seizure was part of a pseudo-
scientifically supported program of social Darwinist survival of the fittest.
