Second opinion

(In response to Condition critical)

It is unfortunate that such an important topic as medical services today and tomorrow was given so superficial and biased a treatment (Nation, January). Could we not have had one article defending the public system and another advocating for private delivery of public health services? Even the description “two-tier” used throughout connotes a double standard — not necessarily the case with private delivery of services. What about the experiences of other countries, positive and negative, with public and private systems? What are the costs, both to our public systems and to individuals, when they are forced to go to another country for service because the public system does not have the necessary treatment available on a timely basis or at all?
